Who is Wizkid?

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, professionally known as Wizkid or Starboy is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who was born on July 16, 1990. He was born and brought up in Surulere, Ikeja, Nigeria. Starboy is recognized as one of the world’s most powerful singers especially after he came into the limelight when he dropped his debut album Superstar (2010).

He started his music career when he joined his church choir and was inspired by top artistes like Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade and co. He openly credited the Nigerian rapper Naeto C for mentoring him from the age of 15. Formerly he performed as a solo artist with the name Lil Prinz and teamed with his five friends to form a band, “The Glorious Five”. He and his friends managed to release just a studio album before they disbanded.

That was just the beginning of his peak. He was signed into Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) after dropping out of the university in 2009. The subsequent year, he had to hit the studio to record his album, Superstar with a new adopted name, Wizkid. He released his first single, Holla at Your Boy (2010), the second, Tease Me/Bad Guy (2010), and the third, Don’t Dull (2010). The whole album was later released on June 12, 2011.

Fortunately, he signed a deal with Pepsi in 2012 which worth some $350,000 according to reports. That same year, he began to cook his second album, Chosen, which after many considerations, he renamed to Ayo. He dropped the lead single of that album, Jaiye Jaiye on May 2, 2013, and featured his inspirational artiste, Femi Kuti. On September 6, 2014, the album was released, featuring great names like Banky W, Femi Kuti, Tyga, Phyno, Wale, and Seyi Shay.

After pulling enough weight in the Nigerian music industry, he decided to open his own record label. And on March 5, 2013, he created Star Boy Entertainment. To top the achievement that very year, Wizkid signed an endorsement deal with MTN and Guiness Larger Beer.

Over the years he has collaborated with the likes of Drake, Chris Brown, Skepta, and has tooped the US Billboards times without number. His song with Drake, One Dance (2016) topped the Billboard US Hot 100, topping the chart i n 15 countries making him Nigeria’s most successful pop singer. He has won three Billboard Music Awards, a Black Entertainment Television, BET Award, seven Headies Awards, two MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards, four MTV Africa Music Awards, six Nigeria Entertainment Awards, one MTV Europe Music Award, two Channel O Music Awards, two City People Entertainment Awards, two Ghana Music Awards, a Future Award, and a Grammys Award.
